Athens - Oct 13
We had a nice day in Athens even though it was cloudy
and very windy. The temperature only got to about 74 F
and it actually started to rain a little when we were
returning to the ship. Judy and Rusty took a longer tour
and they probably had at least part of it in the rain. It
only lasted a couple of hours and then it cleared up and
the sun came out again.
We first
visited the site
of the first
modern
Olympics
which was
held in Athens
in 1896. The
ancient
Olympics
were held in
Olympia,
Greece
between 776
B.C and 393
A.D.
We then went to
the Acropolis. It is
under repair and
restoration so
there was a lot of
scaffolding and
work going on,
but you still got a
good view of the
original structure.
Our Greek guide
had extensive
knowledge of
Greek history and
ancient places.
This is a view
from the
entrance to the
Acropolis.
This is a theater
that is at the
entrance to the
Acropolis. It was
recently the site
of a concert by
Yanni. It's called
the Odeon of
Herodes Atticus
Some leftover
"parts" of the
Acropolis
buildings.
This is the
Parthenon and
it is undergoing
extensive
renovation, but
was still
impressive.
The crowds
were large as
you can see,
but at least it
was cool.
The
Erechtheion is
another ancient
building on the
Acropolis.
This is the
harbor in
Athens
(Piraeus). It was
really windy
today, so the
waves are
much bigger
than we have
seen on the
whole trip. It
may be a little
rougher ride
tonight!!
When we got back
to the ship we
spent some time
touring it since we
hadn't done much
of that yet. We
spent the afternoon
on the veranda
sipping coffee and
tea. The Greek
Navy barracks are
right near the ship
and they came
down for the
afternoon to
practice their
marching in front of
the ship so it gave
us something to do.
