This small Mediterranean island is marked with medieval castles, palaces, minarets
and grand churches. Malta was another stop where we took over 200 pictures. It
seems that there was something around every corner that we wanted to record in
pictures.  The whole community is very picturesque and has an extensive history
going back at least 7000 years.  Some of the ruins in Malta pre-date the pyramids of
Egypt.
The streets of Malta are very
narrow and cars share the streets
with the pedestrians.  There are no
sidewalks.
The decorations and
architecture of the
buildings are really
beautiful and contain a
lot of religious
symbols and statues.
Enclosed balconies are
common in the
buildings, our guide
said they were a
holdover from the days
when the women had to
stay in the home most of
the time. They would sit
in these enclosed areas
and watch the world go
by below.
We visited two cathedrals in Malta.
Both were exceptionally beautiful.
St. John's was the only one that
allowed photos.  THe other
cathedral was just as stunning as
St. John's
The floors of the cathedral are
covered with flat "head stones"
that tell something about the
person buried there and are a
piece of art in their own right.
There are several hundred of
these in the cathedral and they
cover the entire floor area!  Each
one is unique.
The streets were very narrow and
old.  This is where we visited the
second cathedral, St Paul's, which
did not allow photos.  We did get a
postcard that had pictures of the
interior.  It is just as beautiful as
the first cathedral.
Note the two clocks on the
cathedral. The one on the right
tells the time and the one on the
left the date!
The architecture of the city was
very interesting from the building
fronts to the door knockers.
Malta
Malta Harbor, with our ship at the right, is one of the prettiest we were in
on this cruise. It is completely surrounded by honey colored stone
buildings that are old walls for protection, castles, churches, and very
interesting old buildings.
We also visited the city of
Mdina in Malta.  This the
original city and the home of
the Knights of Malta.
