Iguazu Falls, Argentina - March 16, 2008
Our 40th Wedding Anniversary!!
Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horsehoe
shape over nearly two miles of the Iguazu River, Iguazú Falls are the result of a
volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth.
Iguazu Falls is really spectacular.  We spent the day on two different
hikes to see the falls from different perspectives. We took about 300
pictures and I picked out a dozen or so to show you in advance. What a
great way to spend our anniversary.  As you'll see we did some pretty
exciting things!
We started the day by taking a little
train through the jungle to a walkway
that took you out to the biggest falls
called "Devil's Throat".
Along the way we saw some of the local wildlife
including this Caiman.  It was about 5 ft long (they
grow to 3 meters according to the guides).  It was
very exciting since we were actually photographing
some fish from the walkway when this Caiman
appeared from underneath - looking for a fish
meal I think!
This is "Devil's Throat"! I took some
movies also since half the experience
is the thunder of the falls.
Below are more of the waterfalls.
There are over 270 of them here!
This is us at the base of another waterfall we passed on the way to
our water adventure.  It was a long hike (especially for me), over
1.4 km, mostly downhill (unfortunately we forgot that at the end of
our water adventure we would need to climb back up!!
Here is the start of our water adventure -
eventually we end up under that big falls in the
background!! That's "Devil's Throat" and we got
to see it from the bottom looking up! Needless to
say, we got completely soaked - including my
camera even though it was in a waterproof bag.
The camera is OK though.
This is the second waterfall we went under on the trip.
This is another boat in front of us.  I could only take
quick shots since there was lots of mist getting things
wet even before we went under the falls. They made a
movie of the entire event and we bought a copy that we
can show when we get home.
Kathy took this picture to "document" that Rusty and
I were always trailing behind taking one last
"magazine quality" photo!!
For our anniversary dinner we decided to go into
Puerto Iguazu instead of eating at the hotel.  We ask
for a recommendation from the front desk and rented
a car and driver for 4 hours (only $40!!).  We went to
a barbecue restaurant (an Argentinian favorite). Judy
and Rusty bought us dinner and wine. We had beef
tenderloin and a very good dessert.
Our driver took this picture of us outside the
restaurant. After dinner the driver took us into
downtown to do a little shopping.
