Capital of Campania's southernmost province, the lively port of Salerno is a good base
for both the Amalfi coast and the ancient site of Paestum further south. The town's
setting, strung along the top of its gulf and looking across to the sheer wall of the
Amalfi coast, is beautiful. We took an excursion to the Greek ruins at Paestum.
These Greek temples
were constructed about
500 BC and they are in
amazing condition.
There are three large
temples and the remains
of a whole community.
Outside the city a
Necropolis was found.
When the tombs were
opened they contained
many artifacts from the
time 300 to 400 BC. The
interiors of the tombs
were painted like the
one here and provide a
look at life during that
period of history (there
was a lot of war,
hunting, and drinking!)
We drove through the city of Salerno and several smaller
villages to get to the ruins.
